Understanding the difference between reflex integration and sensory integration in pediatric OT means recognizing two related processes that shape how a child moves and behaves. Reflex integration is about primitive reflexes—automatic, brainstem-driven patterns that babies use early on. As the nervous system matures, these reflexes should become inhibited and integrated into more purposeful, voluntary movement. When primitive reflexes persist, they can interfere with posture, coordination, and fine motor skills because the child relies on immature, reflexive patterns instead of coordinated strategies.

Sensory integration, on the other hand, focuses on how the brain receives, organizes, and uses information from the body and environment to guide behavior.
